Salary Range: $75,000-85,000/year

Reporting directly to the CEO and/or COO and/or VP of the Regeneration Department, the Product and Innovation Portfolio Manager will manage all aspects of the research and development (RD) product, design and innovation. Leading the development of a potential pipeline of products and/or categories to ensure a sustainable stream of innovative product introductions over the long term.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research Design and Execution: work collaboratively and guide cross-functional teams in the development and implementation of a broad, coordinated set of innovation projects to commercialization to meet revenue, volume, growth, and quality goals 
  • Analysis: constantly up to date on the ongoing market, category, external trend insights, and brand analysis to develop concepts and ideas
  • Storytelling: collecting, analyzing and presenting data from the industry and research to bring internal and external stakeholders along
  • Project management: facilitate the definition of project scopes, goals, tasks and resource (people and cost) requirements
  • Act as the link between Marketing, Technology, Sales and Operations to operationalize plans
  • Take a lead role in maintaining ongoing communication with external stakeholders and contractors
  • Executing with Excellence: develop timelines based on targeted launch dates, project types and complexity of development
  • Ensure that project scopes and timing take into consideration key elements such as route to market, legal and regulatory considerations, product type, production / 3rd party agreements and overall reduction of complexity
  • Ensure that suitable risk assessment and contingency planning takes place, is communicated and agreed upon by all stakeholders
  • Report progress of projects to senior management on a weekly basis
  • Alert senior management of issues and highlight their impact on timelines and launch dates
  • Ensure all projects are properly documented and have been reviewed and agreed upon by all appropriate stakeholders
  • Prepare and edit emails and reports, lead meetings, and make presentations.
  • Own and manage the P&L: accountable for product P&L and business case development for new innovation propositions 
  • Goal setting and planning for the department
  • Work with the senior management team to set departmental objectives for the next one to three years
  • Prepare and manage a budget in collaboration with senior management
  • Create, review, evaluate, implement, and monitor both departmental and interdepartmental standard operating systems and processes
  • Monitor, evaluate and analyze innovation processes
  • Understand the recycling industry and its trends, as well as where it is heading in order to identify, create and implement appropriate new innovation strategies
  • Manage the new product introduction process
  • Liaise with key stakeholders across R&D, operation, finance, etc. to deliver new products on time / budget / high quality
  • Develop a technology and innovation portfolio that provides unique solutions to GCS customer needs
  • Communicate technical solutions and knowledge to internal and external collaborators
  • Facilitate the development of products ensuring they are in line with strategic & commercial priorities
  • Partner with internal groups such as marketing, sales and operations to create and manage a product and technology plan to support overall business strategy and drive processes to manage the new technology portfolio
  • Work closely with all departments to understand our needs and develop an innovation pipeline of products and or services
  • Manage relationships with peers, key customers, and strategic partners

  • Develop an Innovation strategy, roadmap and pipeline
  • Continuously improve the brand’s technological capabilities
  • Explore and test new and emerging technologies and partners to ensure Green Circle is staying at the forefront of innovation in our space
  • Create a strong innovation strategy and robust pipeline that is customer-focused and aligned with our long term business strategy, and drives our core business
  • Identify and develop new strategic opportunities, platforms, and innovation initiatives that will enhance our existing business and portfolios of partners for development, R&D and to bring these innovations to life
  • Develop an effective and streamlined innovation process that delivers a consumer-validated, commercially viable and profit-enhancing innovation pipeline
  • Collaborate with key vendors and partners around key trend/innovation insights and future new product introductions
  • Work closely with GCS Sales and Marketing to support the company’s sales growth initiatives
  • Work closely with Operations on special projects to enhance and support company-wide initiatives
  • Build and maintain a network of external innovation and technology contacts and resources, and utilize where appropriate to support our growth strategy and innovation pipeline
  • Demonstrates outward leadership and ownership around alignment with the Operating Team when decisions are made at the management level
  • Coach and Mentor team
  • Mentor and inspire any direct reports to maximize individual potential
  • Assist in the recruitment and placement of staff; improve organizational structure; delegate tasks and accountabilities (including job descriptions); supervise all innovation projects and team members and monitor and evaluate performance of those team members as required

 

Education and Experience

  • Self-starter, entrepreneurial spirit
  • Must display a strong ability to work in an ambiguous environment
  • Strong leadership skills to courageously lead cross-functional teams through different project types
  • Entrepreneurial mindset (capable of allocating resources to the most appropriate opportunities in the most efficient way possible)
  • Project and/or people management knowledge and experience
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Research and Development experience
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred (project management, engineering a bonus)
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing people and/or projects
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment
  • Strong ability to build effective teams
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, knowing when to take calculated risks in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong drive for results
  • Strong capabilities in the Microsoft Suite of products and Google Workspace

 

Working Conditions

  • Working from the Toronto Office in a Hybrid role (two days/week in office)
  • Working with a cross-functional team (SECC, Operations, Marketing and Finance, etc.) by managing timelines and following the progress of new product launch projects
  • Must be fully vaccinated with proof of vaccination when working in the office per public health, City of Toronto and government guidelines
