Salary Range: $48,000-60,000

The Sustainability Specialist will support the People & Planet team in its operations, processes and procedures, research and preparation of internal education and communications. Those tasks are mainly focused on, but not limited to, Environment, Stakeholder Governance, and Employees and Community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Sustainability & Environmental Strategy / Roadmap / Metrics reporting

  • Assist in the creation of a corporate sustainability strategy that provides a comprehensive roadmap for our sustainability journey aligned with GCS priorities, Global Compact, SDG and B Corp 
  • Develop and track the Company’s environmental and sustainability goals and with consideration of science-based targets 
  • Improve the collection and monitoring of our GHG emissions
  • Initiate and maintain our customers’ carbon neutrality program through communication and gathering data
  • Engage internal partners to help drive sustainability objectives and priorities and to align on an overall sustainability plan
  • Conduct periodic environmental scans of emerging climate change, environmental issues and additional changes to guide the ongoing evolution of our sustainability strategy.
  • Review and revise existing processes to ensure environmental and sustainability considerations are part of new projects and everyday decisions
  • Help develop tools for internal tracking of results
  • Ensure environmental / sustainability good practices/lessons learned are shared in a timely manner
  • Develop and report environmental  / sustainability metrics internally and to Brand partners

Environmental & Sustainability Training Program

  • Drive positive sustainability culture throughout GCS 
  • Ensure that all fundamental Environmental & Sustainability related training is identified and material is available for all GCS employees as per corporate procedures and legal requirements
  • Develop training materials for both internal and external stakeholders in collaboration with other departments

Stakeholder Governance

  • Stay on top of trends in Stakeholder Governance and present them to Sr. Management to further build strategies
  • Support development and implementation of new strategies
  • Help develop GCS Code of Conduct, send out our supply chain partners, follow up and tracking
  • Help coordinate B Corp renewal materials and supporting documents


  • Research Awards/Grants/Recognition criteria and application processes
  • Help organize team events/volunteer days
  • Help organize community events
  • Conduct technical peer reviews of reports

Key Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Carbon Measurement, Reduction, Assessment, Net Zero is an asset
  • Knowledge of the UN Global Compact and SDG is an asset
  • Knowledge of B Corp Certification is an asset
  • Collaborative team skills 
  • Experience and are comfortable with data collection and analysis
  • Strong Microsoft and Google Workspace skills
  • Strong writing, speaking and communication skills
  • Personal passion and interest in sustainability overall
  • Comfortable training and facilitating learning


Education and Experience

  • Degree in Environmental Studies (Environmental Science, Sustainability, Environmental Management, Urban & Regional Environments, Environmental Politics) 
  • Equivalent work experience in the field of environmental consulting and/or research firms
  • Minimum three years of working experience in the relevant field
